QR Codes for Musicians

“Quick Response Codes” are a modern promotional technique like no other, allowing us to put a barcode on anything we please for people to scan and find with their mobile devices and smart-phones. What’s more, it really isn’t a difficult thing to implement, which is one of the reasons musicians should be using this new technology, and why I’ve written this article about QR Codes for musicians, and how to use them to full potential.

I’m going to assume that everybody here has seen a QR code, and has a rough idea of what they do. As I’m sure you already know, all one needs is a simple reader on their iPhone, Blackberry or Android device in order to scan the code, and are then automatically directed to the chosen URL.

Why Do I Need to be Using them?

The argument of “why” to use QR Codes truly is an absolute no-brainer. If your band or music project has any sort of promotional material, and a website (or even a blog or social network profile) then you should be implementing this technology. Using them make the process of finding your band simple for the public. For example, a QR code on a gig poster could allow passers by to scan it and see your website, or perhaps more relevantly a Youtube video of your performance, and judge whether or not they’re going to head to your gig. Once this puts them online, a properly implemented code may even encourage people to “like” or “follow” your music on a social network, meaning they’re not just hooked for the duration of that one visit, but for as long as you’re tweeting or status-ing your music. You just gained a fan. An instantly zap-able code will allow you to engage somebody who may otherwise look at your band name on a poster and forget it in minutes.

Where Can I Put a QR Code?

Here’s what I like about the QR technology. Once you have a code, you can put it anywhere you please! My advice? Put it anywhere the public will see it. Business cards can look fancy with a QR code, which also provides a good talking point for anyone you hand it out to, but thinking in Muso terms, I’d suggest posters, leaflets and business cards for a kick off, but why not be creative with it? Get some T Shirts made with your code printed on them, print some nice vinyl stickers with it on and put it on your car or tour van, put it on any demo CDs or letters you send out, and even stick it on your merchandise. Think about ways you can make your code spread – why not make some car bumper stickers to give out at gigs?

Where do I Get Mine?

A simple google search for “QR Code Generator” will give you a lot of good results. My personal favourite being “QR Stuff“. All you have to do is tell it what you would like linked to and it will generate your code. These guys even let you play with colours and designs. Marvellous.

What Can I Link To?

Just about anything! That’s what I love about them, they’re so versatile. These codes are not just for your website, but for a video, a location on google maps, an iTunes link or a paypal buy now link are just some of the many possibilities. QR Codes let you put a real life hyperlink on the high street, at your gig, or anywhere at all you can find. Use them.
